Boppard, Germany April 2009‘Spring In The Middle Rhine Festival’Some of you may know that Ardennes took a group of customers out to Boppard, Germany where we spent 4 glorious days on the Rhine. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. I thought you may like to hear about our trip.
Our long weekend trip started when John, our coach driver, picked up us at 7.15am, at the rear of Ardennes restaurant and we had a good run down to Dover and swiftly boarded PO’s ferry to Calais. After a leisurely Full English breakfast on board the ferry for some, we began our journey through France and Belgium having a couple of welcomed stops for refreshments. On board the coach, hot and cold drinks were supplied with a range of complimentary reading material, including a folder containing information on our final destination, Boppard. We arrived in Boppard around 6pm when after a brief shower, and some went for a walk around the town, we all gathered for a welcoming glass of Germany fizz before our evening meal, courtesy of Hotel Wienhous Ohm Patt. The English Owner, John Durcan, provided us with continental breakfast and evening meal on our stay, which was very nice. Saturday after breakfast, we all went our separate ways. A small group spent time shopping in town and from all accounts, spent a lot of money in the excellent Christmas Shop. Another party did the chairlift, which takes you to up to Gideonsheck, with breathtaking views of the Rhine, one of the best views in Germany. Some visited the oldest building in town, which is now a quaint tearoom, whilst others took the coach to Rudesheim, spent a few hours there before returning, either back by coach or a few decided to take the boat back, which sailed past some the beautiful castles along the Rhine. After our evening ‘Schnitzel’ most retired early, whist other went for a few beers in the town.
Sunday, the day of The Spring In The Rhine Festival, which is a one day event that takes place the last Sunday in April every year, when all of Boppard Hamm’s wine growers, and there’s over 20 of them, open their vineyards for you to sample their wines. Some of the vineyards offer tempting local speciality food of the region as well. You collect the free bus, we caught ours at 11.00am which takes you to the furthest part of the vineyard walk, then make your way along the vineyards sampling the wines and foods. The walk is about 6kms long and all along you have the most beautiful views of the Rhine. If you are still standing!! and have made it to the end, you can then catch the last free bus back into town around 6pm. All our party agreed it was a fantastic day and we met some friendly people along the way. Not all the party decided to do the Vineyard walk, instead they took a return boat trip to Bacharach, a lovely town some 2 hours up the Rhine and made it back into Boppard, just in time to do the chairlift. Our evening buffet hot and cold meal, was very much appreciated by everyone. Sadly our long, but all too short, weekend came to an end when we made our departure Monday at 10.00am. Arriving back in Faversham by 7.00pm.
Another trip is booked for April 2010. This time a day longer (4 nights) as many felt 3 nights just wasn’t long enough to see and do everything. If you are interested and would like me to send you further details, please let me know
